The Hill by Sutter’s Mill

By Elton J Mellum

There we sat on top of the hill

While God hung out the moon

About a mile from Sutter’s Mill

And a world from anything soon

In awe we gazed in great delight

At the wonders of the Milky Way

Of angels candles in the night

While fairies came out to play

And the ghostly images of the trees

Like shadows from the grave

Mused eerily on the night breeze

Like some ancient worlds knaves

Then came the storm chariots on high

Across the moon to dart

Turning the tumultuous sky

Dark as a witch’s heart

As quickly as the chariots had come

Came back the Milky Way

And peace returned, the storm battle done

Until the break of day

If you’ve never sat under the Milky Way

In the middle of the night

You need to do so right away

It will be your hearts delight

And if your life ever seems hard

And you’ve lost all your trust

Go to the hill by Sutter’s Mill

And get covered by fairy dust

For ancients say it is God’s way

To make  every man a king

For beneath the wonder of the Milky Way

Life seems a simple thing
