Being There
By Elton Mellum

Sometimes just before dark
When the orange glow
Hangs like a silk curtain
In front of the Mountains
I see the shadow
Of the Bull elk
As he slips into the night

It's the best time to be alive
As the soft light of the moon
Reaches out to illuminate the night
A Mountain Lion screeches his defiance
While the Wolf and Coyote
Prowl the edges of the meadow
And the Owl hoots and all is well

This is the time the Pawnee dance
The Crow sing songs
And the Blackfoot and Sioux
Follow the trails of the night
While spirits move silently
Over old paths of time
To the mountain rendezvous
Of a time still eternal

I sit contemplating the Milky Way
My back to the fire
So as to see into the night
And my mind asks me
Why I don't dwell here forever
Somewhere between the spiritual
And the reality of tomorrow
And I know the answer
Someday soon I will
