Jodi owns the year around Douglas Koa Campground in Doughlas, WY. My days are very busy
and not much time to do the thing I loves, like hunting but, on October 16, 2007 it was one of the Greatest days in my life.
At 9:15am, I stood on top of Slick Mountain in the Laramie Peak Region of the Medicine Bow National Forest, Literally jumping up and
down with joy. I had just shot my first Elk, a 5x5 Bull. I had imagined this moment for the past 3 months after I drew
m first Bull tag, but I had never imagined it to be such a wonderful feeling. This was the second morning of the season and
I was hunting with my father, who had his cow tag and my brother, who, unfortunately, did not draw this year. We 3 have been
hunting together for 30 years. And no matter how the hunt really does go, we always enjoy the company, but of course, a good story
and a nice rack definitely adds to the day. The day before, opening day, we had no luck, we saw more hunters that anything else,
no cows at all and only one bull on a mountain that we were not on, so we were going into day two with not much optimism. Little
did I know! Since Garon and I are avid hikers, working for our Elk adds to the hunt so we were not hesitant to climb. We
started off that morning a third of the way up Slick Mountain, in a clearing, just waiting. After a couple of cow calls from
Garon and some answering bugles, we headed up the heavily
Treed mountain. We headed up higher. The timber started clearing enough
to see about 50-60 yards and just then I sighted a lone cow. As we knelt I brought her into my sights to get an idea of
the shot. After watching her for about a minute and not thinking that anything would be with her, I was caught by surprise at
what I saw coming up from behind her. The on thing I have learned during my 2 Elk hunts is second’s maybe all you
have. I put my sights on her and as luck would have it, she moved out of the way just as her Bull came up from behind.
One shot, he was done, and I said "Garon! I got him, he's down." Garon got up from where he had dropped in front of
me, yes, to get out of the way of my shot and came to my side and said "Watch him Jodie." And sure enough, after a few rolls and kicks
he got up, nicely broad-sided, so the second shot was the last and he dropped for the second and last time. He is no a trophy by any
means but he is My Trophy, the first Elk of the Stewart Family and he made my day GREAT!
